International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound says he is “puzzled” by the reaction to a video showing Chinese fighter Peng Shuai pulling out of a bout.

Golfer Li Haotong, Chinese gymnast Zou Kai and now Peng have all pulled out of activities when American captain Mike Pence is the flag-bearer for the US.

“I think it’s too little, too late,” said Pound, a Canadian.

Peng pulled out of the Beijing Asian Games amid protests by Chinese people.

Following the incident, which was recorded on 11 May, Peng was quoted as saying he could not face the “attitude” of the US flag-bearer.

Pound, who is on the IOC executive board, feels there is a gap between the public perception of the athletes involved and what they actually do.

“They are athletes. To have any degree of accuracy, they represent China. It was their duty,” he told BBC Radio 5 live.

“To have any degree of accuracy, not only does his capitulation to pressure and fear not reflect an authentic Chinese character but it really reflects the surface, uninformed surface of politics.”

He added: “It is hard to disentangle his morality when this happens and this became headline news.

“I think it’s too little, too late.

“They are magnificent athletes. They are not brave. They are doing their job, their mission, to represent their country as world champions.”

Earlier, Peng told Sportsmail he was not unhappy about being involved in a propaganda exercise, saying: “It’s because of their culture.

“I don’t know. It must be something special for them to do that and not just anybody else.”
