The difficult decision Chelsea faces in deciding whether to deploy defender Alex Teixeira or backup Baba Rahman at the heart of the defense has been answered by defender Magda Eriksson.
When asked whether she thought that half-back or midfield would work better with either Jesse Lingard or Danny Welbeck on the attack, Eriksson replied, “Defensively it doesn’t matter, if you don’t play well defensively it’s impossible to play well.”
Lingard and Welbeck were both on the pitch during England’s 1-0 win over Austria in Vienna on Tuesday. That match was supposed to give the outcome of Chelsea’s Champions League playoff tie with Atletico Madrid an added edge, but the match in Madrid was postponed Tuesday and rearranged for Wednesday, when the final whistle of the FA Cup final will blow.
Those two sides have met twice already in the competition, with the Blues winning both matches. Chelsea’s striker Costa was banned for the trip to Spain and has not played against his former club.
Chelsea should not feel too secure in the knowledge that Atletico is likely to be one of the weakest teams left in the competition with just one win from its first five matches. Eriksson thinks that is a misconception. “I think they will have the likes of Diego Costa and they will have the ball,” she said. “It is not like they will have an average team here.”
